[Event] Ambition and its Public Reception: An Interdisciplinary Look at Chalamet's SAG Speech

What exactly is ambition? How much is considered too much, and how do people respond to an unfiltered expression of obsessive passion? This presentation explores ambition from various disciplines, including philosophy, sociology, psychology, and more. Using Timothée Chalamet's widely discussed SAG speech as a case study, we’ll examine the public's reaction to his quest for significance and the broader cultural implications of such a display.

Through the lens of an information professional, attendees will learn effective strategies for conducting secondary research, integrating insights from diverse fields, and analyzing social media reactions. By the end of the talk, participants will not only have a deeper understanding of ambition and its societal reception but also gain practical skills for navigating and interpreting online discourse.

[Thesis] A Comparative Content Analysis of Nation Branding Accounts (@Explore Canada and @VisitTheUSA) on Instagram

How do @ExploreCanada and @VisitTheUSA use Instagram’s format options, and does their usage differ? Do more interactive formats on @ExploreCanada and @VisitTheUSA receive greater audience engagement? How do the themes of @ExploreCanada and @VisitTheUSA posts reveal each brand's attempt to build a national identity and reputation? To what extent are these brand identities similar and different?

Two hundred Instagram posts were randomly collected from each account for a total of 400 posts. I collected format, user engagement metrics (number of likes and comments), and caption text. Format is used to operationalize interactivity; single image posts are low interactivity, image-based carousel posts are medium interactivity, and video reels are high interactivity. A deductive, quantitative analysis answers research questions related to interactivity, and an inductive, qualitative analysis answers questions related to theme.
